At age 51, after a lifetime of public education service, I finally "retired", although, because of taking years off for our own children, I will not receive any retirement benefits until age 60, when I will hopefully receive reduced retirement and some health benefits. With 11 OFFICIAL years of service and a master's degree, I retired making 43,000 a year, with 60 hour work weeks and tremendous pressure. Thanks to the state of North Carolina, I felt neglected, unappreciated, abandoned. (The staff, parents, and students were wonderful!)
